Chapter 19

WHAT WAS TAKING NERO so long? Could he not find the purse? But why would he even care?

It wasn’t like I had anything irreplaceable in it.

There had been a lot of pretty women here tonight. What if he’d decided to hook up with one of them? What if he was fucking some girl’s brains out in the bathroom?

And why was I thinking about it? Why was I bothered by it?

It didn’t make any sense. But I should be bothered, because if he found someone else, he might want to get rid of me.

Permanently.

I supposed it was kind of nice to talk to Nero. Maybe he was right that I never really thought about letting go for a bit. And yeah, I kind of enjoyed the moments when I was just spending time with him and didn’t have to work.

Like tonight.

I’d needed a little break.

A break from all the stress and the rush that had been my life before Nero.

It was good. Nice.

I hadn’t talked about my dreams with someone ever since Ben.

But if I could undo all of it, I would, just for a chance to be with my family again.

My life would be better without Nero in it. He was still who he was, and he wouldn’t change. His goal of world domination—or well, city domination—was of no interest to me.

He and I weren’t compatible in any way, even if the sex was mind-blowing.

Finally, I spotted Nero. He got in the car and handed me the purse, but there was also something else he’d brought with him.

A bag with something, but he chucked it in the glove compartment, and I was in the back seat, so I couldn’t see what it was.

Once the car was on the move, I stared out the window.

Until familiar buildings filled my vision.

“We’re going to pay a visit to your family,” Nero suddenly said, and my jaw went slack.

“What? Now? But it’s late—”

“Don’t worry about that. Your family has already been notified, and they’re waiting for you. I’ll go with you. We will pretend we just got from our business trip to Paris, and we only have a few hours until our trip to Toronto. You’ve seen movies or photos of Paris, right? You can come up with a story if you need to.”

“Yes, but—”

“Good.”

My stomach clenched in excitement, and I was slightly lightheaded. When had Nero come up with this? Why hadn’t he told me earlier?

Why did he want to accompany me?

I was grateful I’d be seeing my nana and Layla, but I was also worried because I didn’t know what Nero had in mind.

His face was completely unreadable.

I got out of the car as soon as it came to a stop. It was cold, and I shivered as I stared up at the building.

Nero was next to me, and he shrugged out of his suit jacket.

I glanced at him, and he draped his jacket over my shoulders.

“Let’s go,” he said.

Everything was so familiar, and yet so foreign at the same time. It seemed like I’d been away for centuries.
